In the Studio | Summer 2016

Now that summer is over and the school year begins, my goal is share more posts with the ideas that fuel work in the studio. This was started back in June, so is being posted a little late. In the studio I find myself working to incorporate multiple creative impulses into something cohesive and honest.  I follow my hand’s growing desire to draw and to make new marks beyond the dot. Back in June, my eyes feasted on the fat buds of lilies as they prepared to bloom. These shapes are pregnant, weighty, and promising and they pull me back…

Fresh Start

The past few months have been focused on exhibits and new opportunities to show my work, all time-consuming processes that often interrupt the flow of work in the studio. Exhibits have come down or been installed, Open Studios is over, the studio is clean, and today I begin preparing a stack of large panels for painting. Hurray! Since 2013 I have been working with a grid of squares and circles and am now exploring the possibilities offered by a grid of equilateral triangles which yields diamonds, hexagons, and six-petaled flowers. I’m also incorporating the distressed metallic and opaque shapes that…

materialize | Lisa Barthelson + Denise Driscoll | Fountain Street Fine Art | Apr 25 to May 19

materialize Lisa Barthelson + Denise Driscoll April 25- May 19, 2013 Reception: Friday, April 26, 5-7 pm Artist Talk: Saturday, May 11, 3-4 pm The exhibit materialize is visible evidence of an ongoing conversation between the artists, their diverse materials, and the invisible, mutable boundaries of identity and idea. Both Lisa Barthelson and Denise Driscoll combine traditional media with the seemingly infinite supplies of debris and data that flow through daily life. Following intuitive processes of organization, transformation, and accumulation, they think through their fingers, discovering mesmerizing pattern, unexpected beauty, wry humor, and fleeting balance. Fountain Street Fine Art 59…

In the studio

This wrapped yarn rope derives it’s pattern from the ATCG sequence of human DNA. 108 characters are completed here. The code: A=red, T=white, C=black, G=gold. Here is another version looped back on itself and using different colors of yarn. This work from the studio from December 2012 and January 2013 in preparation for two exhibits, one at the Sherborn Library in March 2013 and materialize April 25- May  with Lisa Barthelson at Fountain Street Gallery.

A process of growth

I’ve started working on the piece for the AIB MFA Alumni exhibit OBJECTIFIED. Simply, I am making an invisible (but powerful) social network into and object… This follows the same basic structure as the networks in Remember Forget & Remember Again but has the addition of “nodes” at each branching. The nodes are yarn-wrapped pebbles, which is giving the growing piece an interesting heft. I am also interested in seeing what happens when I limit myself to fewer colors and a more subdued palette. I actually selected and bought this yarn instead of working from materials that were given to…
